Rahm, Emanuel, the former mayor of Chicago once said: “You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it's an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before”. Indeed, the above is very true about Swatek Electrical (Pty) Ltd. In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, one of their engineers took initiative and designed a face shield visor in the response to the increased market demand for PPE.
Swatek specialises in the design and manufacturing of electrical harnesses, looms, cables and control boxes. These products are designed and manufactured against stringent military and commercial specifications. The products are supplied to military land forces, aerospace, mining and railway and the specialized automotive market.
According to the Swatek’s, CEO Khuls Mtsetfwa, her team of engineers and designers expressed a need to respond to the Covid-19 call for PPE. Recognising that most products come from China and other countries, it was time to innovate. Despite being in the Electrical Engineering industry this was seen by Swatek as a contribution to South Africa. The product has been designed in such a way that it is lighter in weight and is a one size fits all. It has sponge cushioning around the forehead area for an extra comfortable fit.
Production of the visors kicked off this week at a rate of 5000 visors a day to meet the current order at hand. A recall of part of Swatek’s production line team members from home was done as PPE is regarded as essential items. The plan is to push up the production number of units to at least 10 000 a day. This product has been designed in such a way that it is lighter in weight and is a one size fits all. It has sponge cushioning around the forehead area for extra comfort fit.
